Upgrade to Exchnage 2003 |
|
|
Currently running SBS2000 using everything. I have a full copy of
SBS2003 AND Exchange 2003. I would like to install Exchange 2003 to
get access to the Active Synch for the three of our execs new TREO 650
smartphone.
I hesitate to do this or any other upgrade since things are all
running perfectly (knock on wood)
1) Can I "upgrade" the Exchnage portion only?
2) Advice (real life experience please) on "Upgrading in place" of
SBS2000 --> 2003?
Just gathering details at this point considering a clean new install
of SBS2003 comared to an upgarde in place. I hate the idea of starting
clean!

I'm not sure of the licensing implications of upgrading Exchange only, but
at the least it probably wouldn't be a good idea support-wise. I'd do an
in-place upgrade from SBS 2000 to 2003. If your current machine is fully
patched and running without issues, and your hardware is up to it, you
shouldn't have any major problems. I had a couple of minor issues after the
upgrade (relating to WSS and OWA), but nothing very difficult to overcome.
I did it on a Friday night, and users in the office on Saturday had no idea
that I was still ironing out a few wrinkles - from their perspective, it was
like nothing ever happened.
As Kevin Weilbacher said in a post yesterday, read all the docs, not just
those that apply to upgrading. The one that describes issues that can come
up during the upgrade process is particularly useful.

You cannot upgrade the Exchange portion only. You could add another server
running Win2k3, make it a DC and then install Exchange 2003 on it. You
would want to stop the Exchange on SBS.
You can of course go to http://www.sbsmigration.com/ put together by one of
our very own.

We have done 3 in place upgrades. 1 works as expected. The other two
are not perfect but they were not bone stock SBS 2000 installs. Of the
two that are not perfect all that is not working on one is Outlook
over http. The other is having some ssl/company website issues. That
was no surprise as we did a bunch of stuff to get a Redhat server
behind the SBS 6 months prior to the 2003 upgrade.
