SBS2K upgrade to SBS2K3 |
|
|
I'm thinking about upgrading from SBS2K to SBS2K3. Does the upgrade allow
for the software installation to upgrade the existing software or does it
have to be from a fresh install? |

You can do an in-place upgrade of your existing SBS. People have reported a
wide range of results. My own opinion is that if you are happy with the
status of your existing server's hardware and software, you can do an
in-place upgrade (I was and I did). There's a boxed Version Upgrade for
owners of previous SBS versions - it'll save you some money.

Thank you. That's exactly what I needed to know.

I did two in-place upgrades, so I know it works. But it stillr equires some
effort - you need to make sure your server is patched properly, and then you
want to print out and follow not only the in-place upgrade documentation,
but also the document detailing the list of possible error messages you may
get when upgrading, and the cause and fix for each. You can find these
documentations on Microsoft's SBS2003 server documentation web page.

Thanks, Kevin! I appreciate the additional info. I will print those out to
have during the upgrade.
