Suggestions for Improvement to HIS |
|
|
Anyone out there have any suggestions for improvements to Host Integration
Server for the next release? I submitted a suggestion for improvement in the
area of SNA printing and the product team is now looking at including that in
the next release.
I think it would be great if we could get some suggestions for improvement
(new features not fixes) to the product team. I plan to submit a couple more
suggestions. I just wanted let y'all know that they do look at the
suggestions that are submitted. |

What was the one you submitted?
I have to say HIS2004 has most of the things I've wanted. Couple of minor
ones...
1. LU Wizard to handle auto-creating LU names with alphabetic as well as hex
suffixes. i.e. Don't "stop" at F, go on to G, H etc. Character to switch on
to be configurable (I've dealt with mainframe standards that go to V and others
that go to Z).
2. Remove restriction on LU/PU names being unique across a subdomain. Make
them only have to be unique within a server - that way backup PU's can have
"correctly" named LU's.
3. Allow TN3270 to "share" normal LU's with the SNA process so separate pools
of LUA's don't need to be created.
4. (Non technical). Offer a better/cheaper licensed method for getting
tcp-ip only "client" bits like DB2 OLEDB drivers installed.
5. Support for multiple subdomains from the client without need for registry
hacks and creating dummy empty resources.
That will do for now...

Provide sync across domains and AD so when a user is removed from a domain
or ad their account and resources are automatically removed or flagged for
deletion in HIS
I agree with #2 this would help with the Ghost LU setups so that better
fault tolerance can be achieved by using geographically diverse servers with
their PU's ghosted and actual real LU names not some made up mess and need
to assign thousands of pools to individual users or machine NetBIOS names

The suggestion I submitted was:
Provide a method for moving print sessions for the SNA print service on one
server to the SNA print service on another server. This would facilitate
server recovery and rebuilds in a timely fashion. This would be done similar
to the way you can drag and drop pu(s) from one server to another. The
prerequisite of course is that the queues would have to be created on the
target server with the same names. For a print intensive environment such as
ours rebuilding and migration servers has been time consuming because this
was a manual process for the administrators. They could use snacfg to do this
but a drag and drop capability would be preferred.

That would be good. Though probably as a tool option within the HIS gui to
"check users" or something. And highlight those whose SID's were no longer
available.
I don't think auto-deletion would be a good idea as there could be issues when
a domain was unavailable/corrupted for some reason.

I'd vote for that one too! Not that I do that much printing. But I am going to
have to rebuild a HIS printserver next week.
I'd also like the ability to have printer LU's defined on multiple servers in the
SAME SUBDOMAIN to achieve transparent resilience on failure. (The only way I know
to achieve that at the moment is to have print servers in separate subdomains).

Put back in LSA support, or make it an option. I have thousands of
workstations using LSA on NT and some 98 applications that don't work with
the 2000+ client.
It should be the end-users option to decide if it is a risk. Dropping LSA
will prevent me from upgrading totally to HIS2004.

Make IP-DLC more usable. Currently it does not allow the link to be
distributed, allow downstream connections or pass-through.
