swing migration with domain name change |
|
|
Hi,
We are currently running SBS2000 with a domain name of 'ourcompany.com'.
This was set up for us by an outside consultant a couple of years ago. I am
getting ready to convince the boss that it is time to upgrade to SBS2003. I
would like to do a clean install on the existing box (maybe install new
harddisks) and change the domain name to 'ourcompany.lan' or '.local' at the
same time. Is this practical? Or would I be better off doing an upgrade in
place and just live with the .com domain name. Thanks in Advance.

My understanding is that you can change a domain name if Exchange is
not installed. You have that option when you are swinging. If you have
not seen Jeff M has created a migration toolkit that explains and
scripts some of the swing process. http://www.sbsmigration.com/ Note
that I have no financial interest in the product. I just use the
process every month or so when doing upgrades.

We do have Exchange Server installed. What are my options? I have seen Jeff's
website but have not yet purchased his product. Thanks for your reply.

Yes, a Swing It kit includes the information you require to perform this
task. (funny, I can say that but I've never actually read kit)
I think you're a perfect kit candidate.

Part of the swing migration requires you to yank out the Exchange
references. You can do all kinds of things when Exchange is not in the
way. As mentioned Jeff will answer questions at his website with more
authority then us folks.

Hi Tim,
I'm in a similar situation and would be interested in knowing what else you
find out from Jeff. If you could post back that would be great.
Thanks,
Pat

Pat, what else are you looking for? Several folks have used the Swing
Migration, and can address some general type questions.

Mainly if there are any pitfalls or caveates to be aware of (when doing an
internal domain name change via swing migration). Perhaps there aren't, but
just thought it was worth asking anyway.
Thanks, -Pat
