help on system warnings |
|
|
Happy new year to all here.
From my SBS 2000 server System Log, the following two warnings appears
everyday:
Event Type: Warning
Event Source: w32time
Event Category: None
Event ID: 54
Date: 1/4/2005
Time: 7:32:04 AM
User: N/A
Computer: SERVER
Description:
The Windows Time Service was not able to find a Domain Controller. A time
and date update was not possible.
Data:
0000: e5 03 00 00 å...
Event Type: Warning
Event Source: w32time
Event Category: None
Event ID: 64
Date: 1/4/2005
Time: 7:32:04 AM
User: N/A
Computer: SERVER
Description:
Because of repeated network problems, the time service has not been able to
find a domain controller to synchronize with for a long time. To reduce
network traffic, the time service will wait 960 minutes before trying again.
No synchronization will take place during this interval, even if network
connectivity is restored. Accumulated time errors may cause certain network
operations to fail. To tell the time service that network connectivity has
been restored and that it should resynchronize, execute "w32tm /s" from the
command line.
Data:
0000: e5 03 00 00 å...
Are these two warnings serious? How to get rid of these two warnings? I have
checked the Evenid.net, but I still can not get anywhere. Any help will be
very much appreciated. Thanks in advance. |

Hi, Marina,
Thank you very much for your prompt response.
I have read the artilce you recommended. It seems that this article suggest
configure the Windows time service to use an external time service. I also
read the Article (id: 216734) from the microsoft knowledge base. Anyway, that
article suggest use an internal hardware clock. Can I know your suggestion
based on the experiences you have. We have SBS2000, ISA 2000, exchange 2000
and some workstations (most of them are windows 2000 and xp, and a few of
windows 98). I also noticed that some of the workstations' clock are not
correct (not sync. with the server). I have even manully adjusted the time
clock of one work station (windows 98). but after couple of days, the local
time of the clock is not correct again.

Hi John,
I always let the server sync with an external time server. I always let the
clients sync with the server. Have another look at that article, it does
tell you how to sync all kinds of clients with the server.

Thanks Marina. Based on the article you directed, I have written a .bat file
for that 98 machine to sync. with the my sbs2000 server. It works fine. I
think the previous system/network administrator for our company has just set
up our server sync. with the internal hardware clock. I don't know whether
that is the reason why i see those two System warnings everyday. Now I am
considering configuring the Windows time sevice to use an external time
source. I think I need to find a appropriate stratum 2 public time server in
canada to sync. with.

The server can sync to a time server in France if you like. It does
not have to be in Canada.

Yes, the server can sync to a tiem server in anywhere. OUr company is located
in canada and I kind of think I may find a stratum 2 time server in canada
which is not very busy.
