It's not an isolated case. I have now documented two servers where there is
slow server access from Microsoft products. Word (and Outlook) is the
worst. Windows 98 workstations are ok, but Windows XP Pro workstations seem
to wait several seconds to open documents. There is also an erratic element
to it. Sometimes everything seems normal and then there is a period where
it seems to take several seconds to open of save any document.

Hi Dale,

Please post the ipconfig/all from the server and one from a client.

I may be totally offbase, and I mostly support Linux, but here goes!

I saw a situation in a office I sometimes support where XP boxes with SP2
installed and the FW turned on would take WAY too long to surf the NN or open
documenst. Try shutting off the SP2 Firewall and seeing if that makes any
differance.

Hi Chris,

Very bad advise to turn off the XP SP2 firewall.

It's only bad advice if you leave it off. It's excellent advice if it helps
you solve your problem.

To solve my customers problem we used a third party firewall product, and
made exceptions for the IP's within her network. It is well known that the
FW within SP2 is not the sharpest tool in the shed

Hi Dale,

Wondering why you have 2 the same dns search suffixes on the workstations.
Can you try to set the xp nics to anything but autosense regarding speed?
You can delete the WINS on the external nic.
