I am planning to setup server for Mobile network. Some details on the server,

1. The server should store a database of information regarding Mobiles.
2. This should be connected to the Mobile operator via TCP/IP.
3. Any recharge request from the mobile users will be redirected to this
Server. This server has to grant the request with the recharge-time.

I hope it made some sense.

Here goes my question,


1. What will be the cost of a Server? Xeon based or which ever is the best.
2. How can we measure the throughput of a server?
3. Can a PC be made as server? (I learnt any PC can act as a server) How
reliable is it?
4. Which is the best Operating system?
5. Do you any idea on how to make load-sharing happen? (using two servers)
6. Do you have any idea on disaster management using two servers?

I'm pretty confused by what you are trying to do.
When you say mobiles, do you mean laptops, or pocket pcs, or smart phones,
or just regular cell phones? or are we talking some other type of device.
1. Its hard to price a server. You can spend anywhere from about 3,000 to
30,000 on a server, depends on so many things
2. When you say throughput...are you talking about network speed?? There
are all kinds of network monitoring hardware to do this
3. Regardless of what you are trying to do.... A PC should never be used in
place of a Server, or you can expect a higher rate of failure
4. Whats the best OS?? Windows Server 2003
5. Setup Windows Server 2003 Data Center on two Servers and then setup
Clustering
6. File Replication and Good Backups!!!
