backup DC reallly slow.... |
|
|
Yesterday, I dcpromod a win2K3 server we have to a backup domain controller
in our Win2K domain. THis server originally was simply a backup to disk
server - running Veritas Backup exec. It didn;t do anything else.
When I came in this morning to check the backups, I discovered some of the
jobs were still running. On average, each job has taken almost twice as
long.
Is this to be expected with a backup DC?? SHould it really be slowing the
machine down that much?
Would it be more advisable to set up a backup DC on a machine that is
strictly acting as a backup DC?
ALso, how to I remove the backup DC - since we can not have our backups
running all day too...
Thanks,

I would use Task Manager to see what's consuming the server's resources, and
check the logs for errors. I've had a BDC (or second DC) in every version
since NT4 - being a DC in an SBS-sized network should not noticeably effect
the server's performance at all.
Since you obviously wanted the second DC, I'd just troubleshoot it and
figure out what's going on rather than trying to demote it back to a member
server.
