SBS 2000 REINSTALLATION HELP |
|
|
I may need to perform a complete reinstall of SBS 2000 on an existing server
running SBS 2000, I am looking for any information that will help ensure I
backup all the neccessary stores for Exchange and if it is possible to backup
any other configurations without manually recreating everything from
scratch (Users, DHCP scopes, etc..).
I hvae only one server to work with and limited time to perform the reinstall
24 hours.
I have walked into a situation where no documentation exists on the current
setup and the server is runnning like a slug, users in this small network
cannot connect to the exchange server without getting retry errors and the
server is constantly reporting application errors.
Thanx.

Hi Paul,
Why do you think it will need a total reinstall? If you want to 'copy' the
AD, you still might be in the same trouble. Have you checked the basics
first, like the nic setup? What is the local AD domain name? How are they
connecting to the internet? What do the eventlogs tell you?

Re: SBS 2000 REINSTALLATION HELP |

I have had servers work like slugs because the hard drive had no free
space, the network binding order was incorrect, the dns was incorrect,
dhcp options were not set correctly, wins was not used, the page file
was incorrect, the hard drives needed to be defragged, workstations
had infections and needed to have tcpip stack reset, and other stuff.
Marina is suggesting that a little detective work of your own might
make you a hero.

Re: SBS 2000 REINSTALLATION HELP |

I have checked the Setup (Did a Complete Audit on the
current configuration)
1.80 Ghz PIII XEO
1.5GB RAM
They are running SBS 2000(May be an Upgrade), The
*Internet connection is good (Business Broadband), the
*NIC setup is 2 NIC's (One for the internal Network, One
for the Internet)
*Connections to the Internet are Good
*Initial Logon to the Domain is Slow as well as the
exchange server
*The server is running at %50 as well as %60 - %70 of
memory
*The event Logs tell me alot right now, applications
installed are generating errors (Symantec Corporate
VSCAN, Exchange Errors, etc..) This is why I was
considering a Complete reinstall to ensure everything is
installed as it should be and running as it should be.
I ran the Baseline Analyzer, a Startup List utility to
list running processes and an Audit utility to list what
is installed.
I have some homework to do regarding the information I
retrieved but still was wondering what is involved if I
was to Reinstall the system from scratch.
I know I need to Backup the Priv.edb and Pub.edb for
exchange but can that be imported back into the new
install or would I have to do a backup of all the mail
folders by making tham pst files?
I need to ensure the mail (All information relating to
the user, contacts, journals,etc..) and Public folder
information is safe.
I want to minimize what is running on the server for
performance and will utilize other hardware for firewall
(Smoothwall)
I just need Server, Exchange and Data Sharing capability.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanx
Paul

Hi Paul,
Check the bindingorder of the nics. Check that the AV is not scanning the
Exchange folders and not scanning the M-drive. Check that backup is not
backing up the M-drive.
Check the ipconfig/all on the clients. Does it show that everything is
pointing to the server?
Which other programs are running on the SBS? Which processes are taking all
the memory?

edb and stm if you want to have success with Exchange. I second the
binding order suggestion. Ipconfig/all from server and workstation to
doublecheck.
