Setting up a backup domain controller... |
|
|
We have a Win2K Small Business server, aWin2K server, two Win2K3 servers in
our environment.
I currently do not have a backup domain controller configured.
We had a problem recently where I almost had to completely reofrmat
/reinstall / reconfigure etc.. our domain controller which would have been a
real pain. in light of this, I would like to configure a backup domain
controller.
Out Win2K server is also a terminal server and is a very busy machine. We
have a win2k3 server that is not busy at all (but does not have RAID) as it
only acts as a backup to disk server. I was thinking this might be the best
machine to use.
However, I understand that having a backup domain controller as a win2K3
server with your primary server bewing a WIn2K server presents a problem.
Can someone give me the steps required to configure a backup domain
controller using a Win2K SBS as the primary and a WIn2K3 as the backup or
maybe offer an alternative solution as to which server I should use?
Thanks,
Brad |

I supect all you need to do is the forest prep and domain prep on the
2000 DC to extend the AD schema to recognize 2003 servers.

Have you heard about the issue of the mangled attributes in Windwos 2000
forests that contain Exchange 2000 servers when you adprep/forestprep and
WIn2K3 server??
Is this going to affect me? I suspect so. And it looks like a big pain to
fix too!

Hi Brad,
The following Q article explains how to mitigate against this problem:

Re: Setting up a backup domain controller... |

That is an interesting article. I have run the forestprep-domain prep
at a few accounts without problems. Of course that means nothing. One
account ran fine for a few weeks. The other account ran fine for 6
months. I have done it a few other accounts without problem. The only
reason I do this though is part of domain migrations to SBS 2003. I
would certainly be unhappy if my domian migratin efforts broke a
perfectly fnctioning SBS install.
