Added Second NIC - Network browsing error from XP |
|
|
SBS2000 network (1 Server) with NT and XP Pro workstations:
This problem did not occur prior to the following change:
Ran second cable & implemented use of second NIC in server--previously
using just one of them. Have 1 NIC for internal LAN and 1 NIC for
external/Internet use. Now when XP workstations try to browse Network
by going to Entire Network>Microsoft Windows Network> DomainName they
ge the following error:
"DomainName is not accessible. You might not have permission to use
network resource. Contact the administrator of this server...etc..
The list of servers in this workgroup is not available."
This error does not occur on any of 3 Windows NT workstations but
occurs on all (9) of XP Pros. Can search for computers by name,
including server, from XPs and access the shared resources fine. Mapped
drives still work.
All other network functionality is okay - Internet, etc...
Did not change any NetBIOS settings, or any other settings, in LANs of
workstations - previously all Enabled over TCP/IP and still are.
Can browse all PCs from server.
Have tried logging in as administrator on XP workstations - did not
help.
Did not check every XP workstation to make sure the Computer Browser
service is started since this was not an issue before.
If you need any of the NIC setup, let me know.
What could be the problem -
Thanks |

Where is the second nic plugged into
Is its IP address on a separate subnet from the internal nic?
Also is this two separate nics in the server or one of those dual channel,
load balancing nics?

Don't forget the ever popular ipconfig/all from both the server and
the workstations. Servers and workgroups in the same sentance is
interesting. Are the XP boxes members of the domain or members of some
workgroup?

As prior to implementeing second NIC, all XP boxes are members of the
domain - nothing changed here. Why ipconfig /all? What do I look for
that might give me a clue? Could this be related to ISA Server? |

The second NIC is physically separate - integrated on SuperMicro
motherboard like the 1st NIC. Here is the NIC setups:
SBS2000 Server:
LAN - INTERNAL NIC:
IP: 192.168.16.2
SN: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: blank
DNS: 192.168.16.2
WINS: Enable NetBIOS over tcp/ip
LAN - EXTERNAL NIC: (only TCP/IP is checked in network properties)
IP: 192.168.16.1
SN: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.16.xxx (ISP DSL modem IP address)
DNS: 192.168.16.2
WINS: Disable NEtBIOS
XP workstation:
IP: 192.168.16.xx
SN: 255.255.255.0
GW: blank
DNS: 192.168.16.2
Any ideas? I think the second NIC is setup incorrectly... |

You need to have your internal and external NIC in different subnets (IP
address ranges).

your network from the left hand side of the page)

Also - be sure to verify your binding order. It's been my experience that
when you add a nic, SBS2k likes to put that new nic at the top of the
binding order. Your internal nic should be listed first, followed by your
external nic . . .

Ok, but why can the NT workstations browse Network Neighborhood and XPs
cannot? Thanks. |

In order to get the Internal & External NICS on different subnets(IP
address ranges), and the ISP's DSL modem/router (setup/controlled by
the ISP) is the gateway at IP address 192.168.16.254, can I put the
external NIC at something like 192.168.1.2? This would put the external
NIC outside the router's subnet - right? Thanks again |

This illustrates a traditional SBS install for me. The SBS is on the
192.168.16.x network. The external nic is on the 192.168.1.x or
192.168.0.x network. You would have to get into the router to set it
to use the correct ip scheme you need. I have not had an isp prevent
me from getting into a router in a while but there are a few inmy
market. You would just call the isp and ask that they set the router
to 192.168.1.254 and set the traffic to flow to 192.168.1.2. I would
set up my external nic to 192.168.1.2
I name my nics Internal and External. There is a click in Network
Properties/Advanced/Advanced Settings where you make sure the binding
order has the internal nic at the top. If this is not dome then you
have all kinds of problems with your internal network.
Also note that inside of ISA is a Local Address Table. It should only
have the ip rnage of your internal network.
