Howdy-

This question relates to an NT 4.0 to 2003 upgrade process...

Scenario:
Our environment currently has two NT 4.0 DCs, several 2000 and 2003
member servers and most importantly, three Network Appliance file
servers emulating Windows 2000 and 2003 servers. We don't really use
the true NT 4.0 servers for file-sharing, but rather use the NetApps
instead, and many shares & countless directories (incl. Home Directories
& user profiles) have been setup with %DOMAIN%\%username% and
%DOMAIN%\%groupname% permissions.

Question:
- Because of this setup, am I tied into upgrading the current %DOMAIN%
in place and prevented from creating a new 2003 AD domain with a
different name if I want to preserve all of the current NTFS permissions?

- Also, does that mean that my new AD root domain should be named
similarly? Old NetBIOS domain name?
Ex: %domain%.dnsname.com

Or can it be an internal-only style?
Ex: %domain%.windows.local

Thanks in advance,
Brian

Hi Brian,

Thanks for your posting here.

Do you mean to upgrade NT domain to Windows Server 2003 domain not migrate
to a new existed Windows 2003 domain? If you will perform upgrade on NT
PDC to Windows server 2003, all the user accounts in NT domain will be kept.

So all the permissions will not be affected on the servers in domain.

As for the question 2, in Windows 2003 domain, there are domain DNS name
and domain NETBIOS name. NETBIOS name is same as your original NT domain
name. You can input a new domain DNS name when you run dcpromo in the new
Windows Server 2003. You can choose the DNS name as you desired.

Here are some articles for your reference.
