2000 Migrate to 2003 |
|
|
My company currently has Windows 2000 server and about 20 clients.
Lately they're going to purchase a new machine and Windows 2003 server
license. My duty is to replace the old Win 2000 server. The 2000
server was the only one DC in the forest. I wanted the new 2003 server
to have same domain name (example abc.com same as 2000 server). How to
transfer all user accounts to the 2003 server? Because there must be a
conflict if I'm up the 2003 server, problem due to same domain name.
Anyone can advise me? Thanks

You really don't do it that way (exactly)....

You install the (new) Win2003 server as an ordinary
server, join it to the EXISTING domain, and then
DCPromo it to become an additional DC in that
(existing) domain.
Once it is fully functional as a DC in your current
domain, you may keep or remove the existing DC.
If you remove it, then it is best to FIRST transfer
all of the "single master roles" (aka: FSMO) and
add the new server as a GC (check box in AD
Sites and Service on the NEW DC.)
Once that is done, you merely DCPromo the old
DC while the new one is online so that the new
one will realize is partner is leaving.
You will of course need to make similar arrangements
for you Internal DNS server which is almost certainly
the current DC.

This process should be very simple.
Backup the system state of your W2K Server this will backup your Active
Directory database.
Bring up your Server 2003 box.
Run DCPromo on Server 2003
Select new DC for existing domain
Transfer your FSMO roles (KBA255504 - Using NTDSUTIL.exe to seize or
transfer FSMO roles to a domain controller) from the W2K Server to Server 2003
Run DCPROMO on W2K Server to demote from DC.
If possible I would rebuild your W2k server with Server 2003 and promte to a
DC for backup.
Of course it is always best to perform a test mirgration in a isolated
network before messing with your live enviroment.
Also use the following MSKBA
KBA555040 - Common mistakes when upgrading a Windows 2000 Domain to Windows
2003 Domain
KBA325379 - How to upgrade Windows 2000 Domain controllers to Windows Server
2003
KBA314649 - Windows Server 2003 adprep /forestprep command causes mangled
attributes in Windows 2000 forest that contains Exchange 2000 Servers
KBA
Hope this helps.

You can create your new domain and them use the Active Directory Migration
Tool to tranfer your users to the new domain.
