We have to upgrade our server from NT4 to a new server.

The first idea was to migrate to Win2000 server, but at the same price
we can get Win2003.
The last solution makes more sense, while in short MS will not support
anymore Win2000.

On the other hand Win2000 is more stable and tested as Win2003.
This could not be an issue, but we have another question: on the NT4
server there are running a lot of old middle '90 software, especially a
big Access '97 database .
We have tested these programs under Win2000 PRO (WS) but we do not know
how they can behave under Win2003.

Any suggestion or advice about?

Thank you for replying.

Hi Giobibo,

It seems middle '90 software is a third-party application, the back-end
database is Acc 97. Is it correct?

I have not found any known issue about Acc97 database running on Win2k3
server enviornment. As I tested, Acc 97 can be installed on win2k3.
However, I cannot say '90 software can successfully run in 2k3 network
since we lack of resource about it.

You can run "winnt /checkupgradeonly" command in win2k3 installation CD to
check if this application is compatible with win2k3 server. For more
details about checkupgradeonly parameter, please refer to the following

HTH!

Yes, they are enterprise-applications written in VB5 on a acc97 mdb files.

Actually DCOM and Remote OLE components are running on the NT4-server,
while client applications are on the NT4-WSs.

We'll upgrade only the server (to Win2000 or Win2003), while all WSs
will still run under NT4.

Mhh..should I first purchase Win2k3 to check if it works?
It is not possible to download "winnt /checkupgradeonly", burn on a CD
and check on the target machine?

Hi Giobibo,

You can download win2k3 evaluation version from the link below to run
checkupgradeonly. ;)
