if BDC has to in Windows 2003 domain? |
|
|
Hi, we just migrated the Windows NT domain to Windows 2003 domain,
currently there is one 2003 DC and one NT BDC in the domain. My
questions are:
1) do I have to keep the NT BDC in production since I still has some
windows NT workstations, windows 98/95 s?
I know that BDC is good for roll back, but what if we've decided not
going to roll back to Windows NT, does the BDC still mandetary in this
envrionment?
2) I have keep one BDC offline, in case of any problem. However, for
testing purpose, I promopted it to PDC in the lab, then in order to
keep a good BDC as a backup, I should re-install a saprated BDC in the
lab via PDC, and keep it safe offline.
| Quote: | From time to time, I could turn this BDC on to the production network
for synchronization. Is that correct? Could I restall a BDC directly |
from the live Windows 2003 domain ( communicating with PDC emulator).
Thanks,
Fshguo. |

NO, not at all.

The BDC is irrelevant -- upgrade or remove it as will.

This becomes increasing less valuable as time
and changes in AD progress -- you will almost
never need it anyway.
Make a full backup, save the tape, and re-cycle
the hardware.

If you are going to do that, then just leave it on the
network and running -- you can hide it in a special
subnet if you don't want anyone authenticating off
of it.
BTW, you should look into latest service packs
and the DSClient software on your legacy (NT,
9x) machines.

Hello Daniel,
It is nice to discuss with you again. As for your questions, Herb gave a
good answer.
Since you don't want to roll back to Windows NT domain, it is not necessary
to keep the NT BDC.
If you intend to make the BDC back up the win2k3 domain, I suggest you
upgrade it to Windows 2003 and make it an additional DC in the domain. Herb
has made it quite clear what to do.
Any updates, let us get in touch.
Best regards,
Frances He
