Some questions from a newbie thrust into the fray...

I have a PDC running NT4 and Exchange server 5.5 and BDC running NT4.

From reading the posts here, it sounds like the Upgrade path is the easiest
way to go (provided the hardware is ok). My questions are:

1) Do I have to upgrade Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2003?

2) I see that Exchange is part of 2003 Buisiness Edition. Is the Exchange
upgrade part of the Server 2003 upgrade, or is this a 2 step process?
Anything tricky here to worry about?

3) Is buying the Standard Edition and Exchange separate more economical
than business edition?

3) If I upgrade the BDC to 2003, do I need another license, or does one
cover a Primary and Backup?

4) the primary reason I'm looking at upgrading is that we going to have one
employee working from out of state, so we want VPN for him and others for
working from home and occasional travel. And I would like to set up OWA,
which is not set up now. Anything I should be concerned with here with
regards to what edition I buy?

Thanks...

Hi Len,

If the reason is only for OWA, then you don't need to migrate the
Exchange 5.5 to Exhange 2003, because Exchange 5.5 does support OWA.

Fshguo.

Yes, but I think the improved Spam, Virus and security functions of Exchange
2003 make it worthwhile...

Hi Len,

Please see my inline answer:

1) Do I have to upgrade Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2003?

A: Windows server 2003 supports Exchange 5.5. You can upgrade NT to win2k3
and keep using Exchg 5.5. However, Exchange 2k3 has been greatly improved,
such as OWA. I suggest you upgrade Windows to 2k3 and then upgrade Exchg.

2) I see that Exchange is part of 2003 Buisiness Edition. Is the Exchange
upgrade part of the Server 2003 upgrade, or is this a 2 step process?
Anything tricky here to worry about?

A: What kind of Windows edition you want to upgrade? If you want to upgrade
to SBS 2k3, Exchange 2k3 is the part of SBS 2k3. If you want to upgrade to
Windows server 2003, Exchange is separated from Windows server 2003.

3) Is buying the Standard Edition and Exchange separate more economical
than business edition?
A: Please post this question to microsoft.public.exchange.setup newsgroup
since the Exchange guy will provide more accurate information.

3) If I upgrade the BDC to 2003, do I need another license, or does one
cover a Primary and Backup?

A: For licensing questions, I suggest you call 1-800-426-9400 (select
option 4), Monday through Friday, 6:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. (PST) to speak
directly to a Microsoft licensing specialist. Worldwide customers can use
the Guide to Worldwide Microsoft Licensing Sites
http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/index/worldwide.asp to find contact
information in their locations.

4) the primary reason I'm looking at upgrading is that we going to have
one employee working from out of state, so we want VPN for him and others
for
working from home and occasional travel. And I would like to set up OWA,
which is not set up now. Anything I should be concerned with here with
regards to what edition I buy?

A: Exchg 2k3.

For more information about Exchange, I suggget you post all Exchange
related question to microsoft.public.exchange.setup newsgroup.

Any update, let us get in touch!

Best regards,

Rebecca Chen
