Some Simple NT4 to 2003 domain upgrade questions |
|
|
Greetings.
My situation is this: I have an NT4 domain that I want to upgrade. I
currently have a Proliant ML370 as my PDC/File/SQL 2K/Application Server and
a Netfinity 5500 as my BDC/Exch 5.5/DNS Server. Both servers are doing WINS
and print service is distributed amongst a half dozen member servers.
Web/FTP/Webmail Service runs off a RedHat 9 box. We have about 80 users. I
have a new Proliant ML350 that is slated to replace my PDC. After I confirm
that all files and services are working I'm going to wipe the ML370 (former
PDC) and replace my Netfinity with the ML370 (W2003/Exch 2003) and retire the
Netfinity to a dedicated print server (it was a good machine). I plan on
running in mixed mode a couple of weeks so I can keep my former PDC intact
(NT4) for mental health purposes.
I'm doing a fresh install of NT4 on my new ML350. I've made it a BDC,
service packed it, synched the domain and am ready to promote it to PDC. My
questions are:
1. Should I move files from my former PDC before or after the W2003 upgrade?
2. Should I wait until I upgrade to W2003 to move files or move all my
files while still at NT4 on my new machine?
3. When should I install applications?
4. Is there no way around the 4 GB NT partition up front? I've read the
posts regarding the setup switch when upgrading to 2003, but I am using RAID
5 and it seems I would have to break my RAID set to do this.
5. Will file permissions come over OK, or will they have to be re-created?
Thanx in advance. |

Hello,
Thanks for your posting here.
I assume that you will upgrade new ML350 to Windows server 2003 first.
1. I think it will be better that you move files after upgrade.
2. Same as question 1.
3. After you upgrade Windows and everything works properly.
4. If you use software RAID, you may have to recreate raid set. If it is
hardware RAID, you can use the setup switch to extend system partition.
5. Permissions will not be affected during upgrade. If you would like to
move files to another server keep the permissions, you can try the
robocopy.exe with the "/SEC" switch to copy the folders with their NTFS
permissions. You can download the robocopy.exe from the following web site.

Wish it helps!

Thanx for the reply Bob.
1. OK, move the files after the W2003 upgrade; however, all my files reside
on the old PDC. What I've read recommends taking the old PDC offline right
after promotion of the new PDC prior to W2003 upgrade. Any danger leaving the
old PDC online to copy files?
2. DOH! asked the same question twice.
3. Installing applications after the upgrade makes sense.
4. Can you give me specifics on how to extend my primary partition? What I
was reading didn't seem to specify that.
5. Unfortunately your link to robocopy doesn't work and I can't locate my
NT$ Resource Kit. Could you post another link?
Thanx much. |

Thanks for your update.
1. In general, we offline a BDC for recovery before upgrading PDC to
Windows 2003. So you can just offline another BDC server. If you do not
have other BDC in domain, you can just move the files before upgrade.
4. Please refer to the following article to expand system partition.
HOW TO: Expand the Boot Partition During a Windows Server 2003 Upgrade
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=325857
You can also refer to the Windows Server 2003 deployment document on
Windows Server 2003 installation CD. You will find the following file:
\SUPPORT\TOOLS\Deploy.cab. In this file, you will find the CHM files
talking about this option and some other documents regarding unattended
installation.
5. The link works well on my side. Please copy all the link into address
box and click GO button to try again. You can also search "Windows Server
2003 Resource Kit Tools" on the Microsoft web site.
Have nice day!
