Hi All --

I have an NT 4 Domain with a Single PDC (no BDC). I need to migrate/upgrade
the server/domain to Windows 2003.. I have purchased another server that I am
going to use for the sole 2003 Domain Controller because the client wants to
decommission the NT 4 server. My questions are as follows:

1) Can I just upgrade the NT PDC to 2003, install 2003 on the new server,
turn on Active Directory on the new server, connect it to the domain, and
dcpromo the upgraded NT/2003 box back to a member server? Everything should
migrate via Replication.. right?
2) If not, what is the easiest way to migrate everything from the NT box to
the 2003 box?
3) The clients (desktops) have Windows 2000 and XP Professional running on
them, and are utilizing local profiles on these boxes.. what is needed so
that they can login into the new domain once it is established?
4) Is there a way to migrate all of the data from one server to the other
and maintain rights and permissions??

Thanks in advance for all your help.

Mike

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your posting here.

1. Yes, if you install Windows 2003 as DC in the domain, it will also keep
a copy of the domain data. It will be better that you install a BDC and
force replication before upgrading PDC. In case there is some problem
during upgrade, it can be used for recovery.

2. Upgrade is the most easiest way.

3. When you upgrade the PDC to Windows 2003, you can choose a domain DNS
name but the domain NETBIOS name is still same. As for the clients, you do
not need to do anything. They will not be affected.

4. As for moving files to the new Windows 2003 server, you can try
robocopy.exe with the "/SEC" switch to copy the folders with their NTFS
permissions. You can download the robocopy.exe from the following web site.
