Infrastructure Operations Master Error |
|
|
Friends,
We have just migrated from NT4 to W2K3. We have only one domain and three
AD DCs. There are few NT4 BDCs yet. The consultant who did the migration
put RID and PDC operations master on DC1 and DC2. These two are Global
Catalogs too. He transfered the Infrastructure to DC3 and removed GC
function from it.
Before, we make this DC3 we have been trying it on another machine and in
the middle of promotion something went wrong and the machine failed to
recognize the CDROM drive.
Then we turned it off and removed it from the Network and we started all
over again on another machine. We named it with the same name as the
previous one. We were successful and the third DC is up and running with
infrastructure role.
Later, by mistake some one bring the offline server to network and there was
name conflict because both of them had the same name (DC3). I immediately
changed the bad one with DC4. After this when I browse AD Users and
computers-- domain controllers I could see DC4 but DC3 doesn't exist. When I
open the Operations Master; RID and PDC point to DC1. But when I click on
Infrastructure tab it takes a while and ERROR appears in the box. Bellow it
" the currunt operation master is offline. The role can't be transferred" is
shown.
In the Application Event viewer I see EVENT ID: 1053. I learned that this
is caused mainly dues to Net Logon service. So in services I discovered that
Netlogon is diabled for some reason. When trying to start it it gives me
"Couldn't start the Net Logon service on local computer. Error
0xc0000064:0xc0000064. On the Logon Tab I changed the user to administrator
and Pswd. Then I received "Could not start Net Logon Service on Local
Computer.
Error: The account specified for this service is different from the account
specified for other services running in the same process"
Please help! |

It is impossible (for me) to untangle your message below
but if you have a DC that was an operation master role
which was seized to another DC, then the ORIGINAL
role holder needs to be DCPromo'd to non-DC
You can (if you wish) then DCPromo it again to make
it a DC.

Re: Infrastructure Operations Master Error |

Every time you install Windows, it generates a unique machine GUID. You can
install 100 machines, all have the same name, but this unique ID will be
different on every one of them. So, just having the same name doesn't bring
up a new machine in place of another one that went down. This unique ID is
"tied" to the machine account in Active Directory.
The "replacement" DC3 never had its own account. As a result, Netlogon
reports "no such user name" (error ID 0xC0000064).
The best way to fix it is to:
1: demote both machines.
2: delete the computer account.
3: repromote them one at a time.
4. After that, you may need to perform a metadata cleanup. Refer to:

While the demotion of one is essential, the demotion
of the current role holder (and that other stuff) is
almost never required.
Just demote the DC that (improperly) believes itself
to still be the role holder. |
