Do I need to register Windows 2003 server |
|
|
We are going to migrate the windows nt to windows 2003, just wondering
if we need to register the Windows 2003 server in order to acitve it.
Please advice, therefore we could put this as part of the migration
process.
Thanks,
Fshguo. |

Register how?
Activation is a licensing issue between you and
Microsoft -- you need to do this if you license
requires it.
Registration with ON the Internet (DNS) is NOT required
Registration in INTERNAL (local) DNS is required and
this is done by making your internal DNS servers "dynamic."

DNS for AD
1) Dynamic for the zone supporting AD
2) All internal DNS clients NIC\IP properties must specify SOLELY
that internal, dynamic DNS server (set.)
3) DCs and even DNS servers are DNS clients too -- see #2
Restart NetLogon on any DC if you change any of the above that
affects a DC and/or use:
nltest /dsregdns /server:DC-ServerNameGoesHere
Ensure that DNS zones/domains are fully replicated to all DNS
servers for that (internal) zone/domain. |

Hello,
As Herb has said, if you refer to the production activation, it depends on
your win2k3 server license, such as Volume License or evaluation copy..
Please take a look at the following KB:
302806 Description of Microsoft Product Activation
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=302806
Volume Licensing Products
http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/resources/vol/default.asp
818025 Windows 2003 Server evaluation copy expiration behavior
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=818025
Any update, let us get in touch!
