I've been charged by our new MD with the task of upgrading our domain from
NT4 to W2k3. I've bought the W2k3 server and configured it - as a fileserver
on the domain it isn't a problem.

What I want to do is simply swap servers over - keep the domain the same.
Right at the moment I'm a one-man IT department and going round each PC in
the company to add them to a new domain simply isn't an option.

My question - how do I have the NT4 box and Server 2003 box running on the
same domain while I migrate the user details into Active Directory?

You can use Active Directory Migration Tool to migrate users, groups, and
computer accounts from one domain to another. For an overview of ADMTv2
you can go to
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techinfo/planning/activedirectory/admt.

Frank,

Thanks for your response. I've tried this but it appears you can't use the
Migration Tool for the same directory???

There are basically 2 ways to move from NT to AD. Migrate and upgrade.

See:
How to configure the Active Directory Migration Tool to migrate user
passwords from a Windows NT 4.0 domain to a Windows Server 2003 domain

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;832221

How To Upgrade a Windows NT 4.0-Based PDC to a Windows Server 2003-Based
Domain Controller

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;326209

Using the migration tool requires a trust between the two domains. You can
not create a trust between two domains with the same name.

If you MUST perform a migration I would suggest renaming the NT 4.0 domain
first.
See:
How to Rename a Domain

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;169741

Other wise your only option is to upgrade.

Hello,

I would like to make sure your network envorinment. Since you have stated:
"I've bought the W2k3 server and configured it - as a fileserver

It seems you have not promoted this win2k3 server to be a domain controller
(DC).
If you want to promote this win2k3 server to be a domain controller and use
ADMT to migrate all objects from NT to win2k3 domain, please know the
win2k3 domain will be different from the NT domain. For example, if the NT
domain name is NTDom, you need give a different domain name when you
promote win2k3 server to be a DC.

If you have another win2k3 server, which you want to promote it to be a DC,
you need to use ADMT to migrated objects from NT to win2k3.

Best regards,

Rebecca Chen
