Complex Migration of two domains into new domain |
|
|
We currently have 2 domains one running 2k3 and the other running 2k. Both
have Exchange Same version as OS. Due to an organizational
restructuring/merger we would like to combine into one domain. We would like
to bring in a new domain and merge all the existing user data and computer
accounts along with GPO's and so forth in without having to manually do this.
I think there are two ways to do this and would like some input on which
would be the prefered method. Which option has the least chance of a
catastrophic type failure.
Option #1-
Rename domainA to NewDomain.
Migrate DomainB into NewDomain
Option #2 -
Create NewDomain on new servers
Migrate DomainA and DomainB into NewDomain.
There are currently about 200 users and 200 computers in both domains with 2
DC in each. |

Hello,
I suggest you use the second method.
Windows 2k3 does have the rename tool called random, however, since it is a
complicated procedure and you have more than 200 clients, it would be
better and clearer if you build a new domain and use ADMT to migrate
objects from 2k3 and 2k domains.
You may take a look at how random to rename the domain:

How good is the ADMT tool of MS's?? Is there anything to be concerned with
using that to help in the migration?? Are there any gotcha's that we would
need to be careful of running into??
Also do you know where there is some good doc on how to use the ADMT?? I
have found several locations that will show you how to use it to migrate from
NT4 and where to download, but not any on merging two AD's??

Hello,
From my point of view, ADMT is a very good tool to process the migration.
Technically speaking, we migrate the group first, user and then computer
accounts. It is hard to say the migration process will be very smooth due
to the complicated network environment. The following articles have
detailed how to use ADMT to migrate NT to win2k3:
Active Directory Migration Tool Overview

asp
Domain Migration Cookbook

/default.mspx
Any update, let us get in touch!
