I am currently using the MS 2k3 Study Kit to study for my MCSE tests. I
have created the contoso.com domain on the single DC (the only computer in
the domain so far). I created an OU called Employees and am trying to
create the first user in it. To make the exercises run easier I am trying
to remove the restrictions that require a complex password, or a password at
all. I edited the contoso.com default domain policy under Computer
Configuration/Windows Settings/Security/Account Policies/Password Policy so
that all the listed properties are undefined. When I attempt to create the
user I get the following message: Windows cannot create the object fred
smith because: Unable to update the password. The value provided for the
new password does not meet the length, complexity, or history requirement of
the domain.

The default domain policy is the only policy listed in the domain
properties. What is causing the problem & how can I get past it other than
using complex passwords for my training users?

Disregard. Apparently the settings did not take effect until I closed out
Active Directory Users and Computers and Logged back in.

FYI - log out and in should have no effect on computer policies
being applied or not. You may have tried too soon, inside the
five minute (or part thereof) cycle (in default settings) for the
reapplication of GPOs to DC. Also, not that Account Policies
when set in a GPO linked to Domain Controllers OU are also
effective for the domain. Finally, to change some of the account
polices they must be reversed rather than only set to not defined.
