WinNT4 user without rights to 2003 server |
|
|
Hello,
We use a WinNT4 network (PDC/BDC) with a new Win2003 server (no
migration to AD has been made yet). I have copied a existing user
profile who has all rights on a directory located on the 2003 server.
The new user doesn't have sufficient privileges on that directory,
even if the security tab for this user shows that he has the correct
rights. How can I correct the problem? Many thanks in advance... |

You have a Windows 2003 member server in your NT4.0 domain and a user can
not access his profile. What exactly happens and what error message does the
user receive? Make sure that the W2003 server is also a wins client. By
default W2003 Server requires SMB signing which may be causing problems.
Open the Local Security Policy [secpol.msc] and go to security
settings/local policies/security options and the option for Microsoft server
digitally sign communications(always) change to DISABLED. By default Windows
2003 has much higher security that NT4.0 and there could be other
incompatibilities including security options for anonymous access. See the
link below and review the security settings and how they need to be
configured for existence with NT4.0 computers. --- Steve

examples of compatibility problems.

If he has the correct PERMISSIONS (not rights) then he
has them UNLESS he is almost a member of a group or
he himself is DENIED (that) access.
How do you know he doesn't have the correct permissions?
(Really, if you see the permissions we need to know what
symptoms you then experience...)

Are you perhaps confusing the Share permissions with the
NTFS file/directory permission -- both must be sufficient
for network file access.
Are you certain that both the user's machine and the Server
are authenticating (themselves, i.e., the computers) in the
domain. Failure to do so by either would mean the user
could not really authenticate in a context where the permissions
were granted.
