VPN users cannot see domain shares |
|
|
Hello
I have a a windows xp machine that succesfully connects to a windows
2003 domain via VPN. Once connected the user gets the correct domain
ip address info, and is able to ping all other computers in the
domain. However, the user is not able to browse any network shares (
Except for the share on the actual vpn server )
To see if it was a permission issue, I tried vping into the server
with the admin log/password. Yet, the problem persist. It cannot be a
security issue since the admin cannot see the shares as well. By the
way,, the vpn server is sitting behind a firewall and the port 1723
and 47 are being forwarded to the vpn server. Any ideas why a domain
user connected to the domain via vpn cannot see any other shares on
the domain?
thanks.
P.S the laptop that is connecting to the vpn server doesnt have my
domain name under its ip configuration.
thanks guys. |

Are the shares published in Active Directory?
The reason I'm asking is that if not - Windows will have to resort to
old-fashioned browser service, which is not reliable at all, especially with
multihomed servers (good ol' KB 191611)... Using a protocol analyser will
visualise the problem.

VPN browsing can be problematic. If you don't have wins configured in the
domain, try configuring wins making sure ALL computers including domain
controllers, wins server, and VPN server are also wins clients. Once you do
that, the wins server should provide the VPN client with the IP address of
the domain master browser. You can use Ipconfig /all after connecting to the
VPN to see if the VPN client is being assigned the IP address of the domain
wins server or not. In the mean time try connecting to the shares using
their IP address as in \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx\share where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the
lan IP address of the server you want to access. --- Steve
