Are two NICs best practice? |
|
|
We are replacing 4 SNA 4.0 servers with one HIS2004 (and a redundant unit).
All of the old servers had dual NICs and DLC was bound to one and TCPIP
bound to the other.
Is that really still good practice? I'd think that with the bandwidth
available and processing power of today's enterprise class servers versus
the ones from 6 years ago we are replacing that this might be kind of silly.
Thanks,

Bruce,
From a performance point of view then no, unless you have a VERY busy SNA
Server, you don't "need" two nics. However, I'd still recommend it for these
reasons....
1. A nic is incredibly cheap, so why take any risk, however small, that it
should ever cause a performance problem.
2. With two nic's, if one should fail you can quickly move the other protocol
to the working card.
3. Debugging. Having the protocols isolated to separate nics could make
network tracing/debugging easier.
4. Security/LAN separation. Your host folks may well want to separate SNA
and IP traffic onto separate mainframe adapters and only allow the relevant
protocol onto the right LAN.

Thanks very much, Neil. I appreciate the tips. Perhaps I'll add some NICs to
servers when they come in.
