Do you all use group policy at all in your school i.e. Active Directory?
What method was used to setup the shortcut? How are the access permissions
setup on the "shared" folder on the server. It this just a shortcut for
your machine were many other client machines given this shortcut?
Just a couple questions for yah to get to the bottom of the issue.

point to a directory on the server, the directory is called
'shared'. I frequently get the message:
"The item 'S:\' that this shortcut refers to has been changed or
moved, to this shortcut will no longer work properly."
S: doesn't appear in my computer, but if I go to word or whatever I
can type S: in to the open dialogue and get access to S:. When I click
on the shortcut it just keeps giving me this message.
