I am running W2K3 FRS, replicated between 3 sites and and having a huge
issue with excel files. For example, if 2 people in different sites have
the same excel file open from their respective sites; only one person is
ediing the file though. They finish editing it, save it and close it. Then
the other user closes their copy WITHOUT saving it - the system is still
registering this as a modification and therfore deletes the chanes made by
the first user !!!

This has caused us to lose a huge amount of our accounting data before it
got spotted and now we have had to remove most of the data from DFS.

Does anyone know if this is standard or are we doing something wrong ?

Any help or advice would so gratefully received

Many thanks...a depressed admin

Hi Simon!

DFS is not to be used with files that are regularly changed.

In this case, your Excel file is being edited by different users and despite
the fact the last user does not save the file, a new time stamp is placed on
it. FRS then replicates this last file.

My advice would be to stop using DFS to replicate content that is constantly
being "touched"...

I hope it helps.

Let me know if you need more info.

Thanks & Regards!

Thanks, that backs up what we seem to have found. Am just rather confused
why this happens with Excel files and no other types of files. Really
annoying as we need a replicated data structure (for speed of access in all
sites) but we need it to be read/write also.

Looks like we might need to look at a different solution.

Thanks again for the response.

Simon
