I know from reading that DFS shares should be accessed using the
\\domain\root\link path. Can I expect problems if I refer to a DFS
share *on* the DFS hosting server as a local path? This DFS link
will have a replica on another server, but the app that will write
data to the location must see it as a local drive. What, do you with
your experience, see might be a problem with this?

The app will not be able to traverse links. In order to traverse links, the
UNC path (\\domain\...) must be used.
